The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark is set in a fictional fortress named Elsinore, believed to be based on Kronborg Castle, in the city of Helsingør on the northeast coast of Denmark. Originally built in the 1420s, Kronborg was rebuilt in 1574. This late 17th-century engraving shows Kronborg under cannon fire during the Dano-Swedish war of 1658-60, when Sweden invaded Denmark, several decades after Shakespeare's death.
