The spectators are scattered about the shore, with various fishing smacks ; the passengers are being pushed off in rowing boats to the sailing lugger, which is to take them and their luggage across the Channel. There is a fresh breeze blowing ; the whole view is animated, and complete as a picture.

French soldiers, who have just landed, are being bayoneted and ridden down by English troops. They flee in terror-stricken confusion. Among the Englishmen are yokels with pitchforks. Three Frenchmen, dead or painfully dying, lie in the foreground ; beside them is a drum. The scene is a grassy slope leading to the sea, where distant ships are in action and where four French troop-carrying rafts are foundering. Tiny figures flee into the sea.

From this social caricature it seems that some distinguished foreigner was visiting this country in 1784, whose general appearance was exciting more public attention than would be considered polite. The foreigner is dressed in a gay military uniform, and has gone to enjoy himself at the theatre ; but the eyes of the audience do little else but stare at his uniform. The identity of this bird of passage is not very positive at this date.
