Pictured here is Lancaster resident Archie MacMackin, who lived on the west side of Harvard Road. In addition to raising turkeys on his farm, he also served as a superintendent at the town farm in 1928 and as a local school bus driver in the 1930s.

Real love story

Unfortunately, the "real love story" of Eugene V. R. Thayer II and Gladys Brooks came to an end, and the couple divorced a few years later. Eugene later married Elizabeth Harding Prince in 1923. He died in 1937. Gladys lived on to the age of 94, passing away in 1976. She was an avid collector of antique furniture, china glass, prints, and other artifacts. Over the years, she gave many of her collections to museums and other institutions.

Remodeled and enlarged homestead

In 1902, Nathaniel Thayer III commissioned the prominent architect/interior designer Ogden Codman to remodel and enlarge the Homestead in the Colonial Revival style. Today, the building, with its long north and south wings, houses a music conservatory on the campus of Atlantic Union College. It has been listed on the National Register of Historical Places since 1976.

Rev. Benjamin Whittemore house

This home was built about 1840 near the top of Ponakin Hill, also called Whittemore Hill. Reverend Whittemore had returned to his native town in 1843 to preach at the First Universalist Church. The church stood in New Boston, then the name of South Lancaster. In later years, the farmhouse, located on Harvard Road, became part of the Goodhue estate and was taken by the government.

Rev. Charles Packard

This is Rev. Charles Packard, who was the first minister of the Evangelical Congregational Church in Lancaster Center. Also trained as a lawyer, he served the congregation from 1840 to 1854. Considerations regarding his children's education caused him to leave Lancaster. As he was held in high esteem by his congregation, they requested that his remains be returned to Lancaster for burial when he passed away. The family, however, denied the request.

Rev. Dr. George Murillo Bartol

During a pastorate that lasted an extraordinary 60 years, Rev. Dr. George Murillo Bartol served the congregation of the First Church from 1847 to 1906, through the reign of Queen Victoria to the beginning of the 20th century.

Rev. Dr. Nathaniel Thayer

A lineal descendant of John Cotton, Rev. Dr. Nathaniel Thayer, was the sixth pastor of the First Church of Christ on the Lancaster Town Green. Renowned for his eloquence in the pulpit, Thayer was influential in town affairs and the last minister to serve before the separation of church and state in the mid-1830s. His 47-year pastorate ended when he died suddenly in Rochester, New York, on June 23, 1840, at the age of 71. He is buried in the Middle Cemetery.

Rev. Edmund Hamilton

The Rev. Edmund Hamilton Sears was the seventh minister of the First Church of Christ, serving the congregation from 1840 to 1847. Also a poet, he is perhaps best known for having written the well-known Christmas hymn "It Came upon a Midnight Clear."

Roll of Honor and Memorial Star

A star and 11 small flags denoting those lost from Atlantic Union College during World War II are displayed near Rachel Preston Hall on the college campus. No fewer than 240 people connected with the college served their country during the war and were recognized on the college's roll of honor.

Ross manor

Burgess Ross and his wife, Hallie Snyder Ross, who had both taught at Atlantic Union College in the 1920s, purchased the former Howe estate on the east side of Main Street in South Lancaster. They improved the place, adding to it and developing a garden with a large greenhouse. Around 1948, the Rosses sold the estate, with its 16 apartments, to the college. Through the years, it continued to be used for student housing. Unfortunately, the building was lost to fire on February 11, 2000.
