Tablets of 1921. At entrance to Quincy quarries of Granite Railway Company, commemorating the first car on the first railway in America, built "to transport the stone for Bunker Hill Monument from the quarry to tidewater in Neponset River, a distance of 2 3/4 miles." Opened October 7, 1826.
Tie rod and old nails. This partly excavated tie rod is still attached to the first granite sleeper at the start of the Granite Railroad in West Quincy. The wooden rail to which it had been nailed in 1826 has of course rotted almost completely away. The railway was not wholly successful, and because of considerable breakage, as well as delays, Willard stopped using it after 1828.
