May informs Foster that the Board of Managers of the Massachusetts Anti-Slavery Society directed Foster not to sell William Goodell's "Slavery and Anti-Slavery" before they learned of his resignation. May states that the resignation was therefore not accepted. May adds that he cannot understand Foster's determination to sell the book. He asks that Foster meet with those individuals who could attest to the falsehoods in Goodell's text and inquires as to how many copies of the book Foster has sold.

May wishes to publish a column in "The Christian Register" in response to a personal attack made upon him in a previous issue. May then reports that there were two versions of "The Christian Register" issued on the same day, one that contained an article by Reverend John Parkman and another that lacked it. The issue containing the article was sent to subscribers living outside of Boston, while the other was sent only to Boston subscribers. The article dealt with Thomas Sims, a fugitive slave. May claims that an influential Boston Unitarian had the article removed from the paper.

Copy of a letter from Samuel May, to William James, [1847?]

Martineau writes to James the reasons that he did not sign the "Reply to the Invitation of the Friends of Unitarian Christianity in Boston to their Brethren in a Common Faith in England and Scotland." He says that he thinks slavery is a crime of the state and that it can only be destroyed by law, adding that if he inherited slaves he would turn them over to the state. Martineau believes ordinary private manumission is detrimental to the best interests of the slaves for it allows a slaveholder to salve his conscience and does not call for any attempt on the part of the slaveholder to rehabilitate the slave. He thinks that refusing an invitation because of the personal conduct of a member of the inviting organization is a "somewhat farfetched scrupulosity." He doubts that the recipients of the reply will think well of it.

Copy of a letter from Thomas Wentworth Higginson, to Charles Allen, [1869?]

This is a copy of a letter dated from Newport, Rhode Island on Feb. 23, 1869 from Thomas Wentworth Higginson to Charles Allen. Higginson does not want the Attorney General to remove any of the trustees of the Jackson bequest. He says it would not be becoming to the dignity of a philanthropic organization, would alienate the friends of the removed trustees, and it would not be just where the trustees "are evidently not acting factiously." Higginson says that according to the terms of the Jackson bequest, organizations seeking to enfranchise the African American have equal rights with those seeking to educate him.

He outlines the proper objective of the New York and Philadelphia anti-slavery fairs and discusses Vigilance Committees. He thinks that someone might go from Boston to assist in the management of the New York fair and states that the English contributions are destined for Philadelphia.

This article, first printed in "The Boston Christian World," was copied from "The Liberator" of June 14, 1844 by May. The article sets forth the preamble and resolution prepared by the Hon. Stephen Clarendon Phillips and passed by the American Unitarian Association at its annual meeting on May 31, 1844. The resolution asserts the Association's stance against slavery.
