This is the later of two known oil sketches for "Fall of Gog and Magog," the leftmost of three lunettes on the east wall of the Sargent Gallery on the third floor of the McKim Building at the Central Library in Copley Square. A third preparatory study for the panel was developed for Sargent's one-third scale model. This sketch shows a placement of the figures and architectureal elements that aligns more closely with that of Sargent's final panel. Sargent's mural cycle, "The Triumph of Religion," was executed for the Boston Public Library between 1890 and 1919. The "Fall of Gog and Magog" panel was installed in 1916.
