This watch was made by Joseph Martineau, Senior, who was active in London between 1744 and 1794. It is likely that it was made for the Spanish market or a Spanish-speaking customer as the Spanish word "DESPERTADOR" is engraved on the back of the inner case. This can be translated to "alarm" or "alarm clock", probably a nod to one of the watch's functions. In addition, a watchpaper, or a paper label, has been retained between the inner and outer cases of the watch. This paper names Robert Cooper, a watch and clock maker in Gibralter. The reverse of the watchpaper is inscribed with the numbers 27 / 3 / 85, possibly indicating that the watch was repaired by Cooper in 1785.
