Wax Tablet with the Prodigal Son

The plaque illustrates the first two scenes of the story of the Prodigal Son and should be read from bottom to top. In the first scene, the father divides his inheritance as the Prodigal, who is shown in an elegant hat, is observed by his mother and brother. Above, the Prodigal rides with his hawk, followed by a servant with a chest full of treasure. As they approach a young woman, the servant raises a warning finger.The scenes are set beneath canopies of trefoil arches. There are two holes drilled in the center at the sides for cords to attach the leaf to others. The back is recessed to receive a coat of wax for writing.

Weary Herakles (Herakles Farnese)

Herakles was the most revered Greek hero, famous for his great strength. This small version of Lysippus' often copied sculpture of the hero departs from the usual representations. He is shown in a moment of pensive exhaustion following the last and most difficult of his Labors, acquiring golden apples from the garden of the Hesperides, which he hides behind his back in his right hand.

This is an example of a historical painting that recorded the ceremonies and spectacles of the Rajput court. This genre was popular in 19th-century Rajasthan, particularly with Ram Singh II (r. 1827–66), who was the patron of this painting.The wedding procession is depicted here in great detail. The bride's litter, covered with a red cloth, is seen in the center of the painting. In the upper right corner, cannons are being fired in celebration, while fireworks are going off in the upper left.

Wedding rings are often inscribed; this example features inscriptions in several languages. One cameo of the Roman ring is inscribed with the Greek "EYTYXI" (Good luck) and its hoop with the Latin "DVLCIS VIVAS" (Live sweetly). The other cameo depicts an elaborate ship, a symbol of the church. Its bezel resembles a fingernail, which suggests that it was worn near the tip of the finger, perhaps just above the third joint.
