First Quaker meeting house of Salem, Mass. Erected in 1688, and retaining the original framework. Maintained by the Essex Institution on their premises. Until recently, this building was reputed to be the "Old First Meeting House" of 1634; but, that has been disproved. Earliest religious edifice was in 1630, and had been the scene of Roger Williams' preaching from 1631 to 1635.
