Source Description

Mattapan, a smaller village located on the Neponset River directly east of Hyde Park, is depicted in this view. These neighboring villages were documented the same year by the same artist using a similar format. Mattapan is also viewed from the east placing the Neponset River and the central part of the village in the foreground. Since Mattapan was located in the town of Dorchester which was annexed by Boston in 1870, the two neighboring communities were separated politically. However, they appear to have been connected economically. Separate plants of the Tileston and Hollingsworth Paper Mill were located in each village. In fact, each drawing includes an inset illustrating the factory. But look closely! The factory depicted on the Mattapan view, which is labeled Tileston & Hollingsworth, Mattapan Mills, is not the same factory that is depicted in the view, directly above the inset. Comparison with the Tileston & Hollingsworth, Paper Mills inset on the Hyde Park view shows that the same image was repeated on both views! But before we accuse the artist of deliberate deception, notice that the Hyde Park plant also appears in the Mattapan view on the left hand side as the Neponset River fades into the horizon. Considering that the residence of J.B. Tileston was also placed as the first marginal inset in the upper left corner of the Mattapan view, it would appear that the Tileston and Hollingsworth Company was a major sponsor of both drawings.
