William Lloyd Garrison writes to Joshua B. Smith: "I send the bearer of this to you, in order that you may inquire into his case, which, if genuine, comes within the objects of the Vigilance Committee. Who 'H. Cole,' of Hartford, (who writes the enclosed letter,) is, I do not know. On examining the bearer, you will be able to determine what ought to be done for him, and will inform him accordingly."
