William Lloyd Garrison describes Montpelier and the surrounding mountains. For five dollars they are using a small, unoccupied meeting house; all the other churches were inaccessible. Montpelier is the "head-quarters of political demagogueism [sic]." The first meeting was thinly attended. Samuel May's speech was excellent. Garrison explained his religious stand. There were three ministers at the meeting. Garrison and others invited discussion, but no objection was propounded. There was another meeting last night that was much better attended. Garrison expounded on disunion and was warmly applauded. The collection amounted to seven dollars. Garrison leaves for West Brookfield today. It rained all night.
