Source Description

In reply to a letter by Amos A. Phelps, Gamaliel Bailey expresses his own antislavery sentiment and disapproval of the course taken by William Lloyd Garrison and Massachusetts Anti-Slavery Society. He says “[y]ou never can prevail on the American people to be abolitionists if they become impressed with the notion that in so doing, they must break down a clergy, ... abolish Sabbath, and set aside all family and civic government.”
