Source Description
In 1816 Engelmann founded one of the first lithographic workshops in France. This book was published to exemplify the versatility of lithography, probably as an attempt to interest artists in the medium. While A Landscape demonstrates the use of a tone plate—here printed in ochre—to realize a colored background, other pages illustrate how lithography can imitate wood engraving or be used to draw a detailed map.
