Horn now works in different media from drawing and installation to photography and video. This compilation of films includes her performances and films she directed, including a feature-length comedy starring Donald Sutherland and Geraldine Chaplin. The photograph that accompanies the videos is from a performance she enacted in an elaborate “Cockfeather Mask” with which she would caress the face of a person to establish a physical bond.

Ōmori, from the series Famous Places in the Eastern Capital

Sites around Edo (present-day Tokyo) were popular subjects of ukiyo-e (pictures of the floating world) prints in the early 1800s. The calligraphy in the red circle on the upper right is the title of the series, The Famous Places in the Eastern Capital. The Ōmori district, on Edo Bay a few miles south of Edo, was known for its cultivation of nori, the crackly sheets of seaweed commonly wrapped around rice balls or sushi rolls. Utagawa Kuniyoshi depicted two women gathering seaweed from cultivation beds. One uses chopsticks, while the other gently rakes the seaweed into the baskets in their boat. The tip of another skiff behind the stand of plants on the right and the cultivation beds in the distance suggest the scale and importance of this industry.

Ōtsu-e Nirvana of the Buddha (Ōtsu-e Butsu Nehanzu)

The painting parodies the traditional representation of this subject. The death of Buddha is actually the moment he achieves nirvana and escapes the endless cycle of death and rebirth. Hakuen transformed this serious moment (see The Death of the Buddha [1916.1141]) into a lively parody with otsu-e subjects. Mourners surround the Buddha. An oni, who pretends to be a priest, holds his gong in the air as he beats his drums and chants prayers. The wisteria maiden appears at the left, bringing water to the mourners. Behind her is an oni in the guise of a thunder god beating his drums. The animals along the foreground represent other otsu-e characters and models. The painting would have amused 19th-century viewers familiar with the usual Buddhist imagery.

“Doctor,” Berea Children’s Home, Berea, OH

Sage Sohier was commissioned by The George Gund Foundation to document early childhood education classes at pre-schools that were part of Invest in Children, Cuyahoga County’s public-private early childhood partnership. Her images, says the foundation, “offer a delightful glimpse into the daily lives of these preschoolers as they learn about the world around them and build the critical foundation needed for success in later life.”
