Document source description
Rather than creating a purely decorative design, Émile Carayon devoted this binding's entire front cover to creating a picture that directly reflects the contents of the book. Using a technique called cuir incisé, or incised leather, he brought artist Auguste Lepère's (1849–1918) drawing of a fashionable young woman into lifelike relief. (Lepère also made the wood engravings that illustrate the text.)
