In this painting, the United States frigate is sailing through high seas toward port. At the right, a paddle-wheel ship flying the American ensign is under steam and at the left is another American naval ship under sail. The waning sun breaks through the cloud cover near the horizon, casting a warm light across the scene.The de Simones were a Neapolitan family of ship-portrait specialists who worked in oil and gouache in the 2nd half of the 19th century.
