Source Description

Written in Cambodian Mul script in the Pali language, this manuscript is part of the Adhidhamma scriptures. Only six of the ten birth tales of the Buddha appear, and one cover is missing, suggesting that the manuscript is incomplete. The representation of each tale has been reduced to only two figures, one on each side of the illustrated page. This creates a shorthand version of the story, with fewer visual clues to the content than usual. Opening with an illustration depicting two devas, as introductory figures, a common feature of Buddhist manuscripts of the 19th century.
