Document source description

This stand for a book has a adjustable and collapsible "back". The cast and chiseled reliefs around the base depict scenes from the Passion: Christ scourged, the Agony, and the Arrest. One of the coat of arms, bearing the device of th Alba family, appears to be that of Cardinal Juan Álvarez de Toledo (1488-1557), Archbishop of Burgos, whose father was the second Duke of Alba. He was the uncle of Fernando Álvarez de Toledo, 3rd Duke of Alba, probably the most famous member of the family. He was a member of the Dominican order. Since the arms of the Alba family are combined with the Cardinal's hat, this reading stand must date from after 1538 when he was made Cardinal.
