Small earrings became fashionable in France in the 1850s. The heads of this pair (together with Walters 44.581) are in the form of Africans wearing turbans. Their chests are enameled green. Three small ruby pastes are set in the rims of each of their turbans, and larger oval ruby pastes are mounted in their chests.
