Source Description
The center of the panel shows the Crucifixion with the Virgin Mary and St. John standing beneath the cross. In the lower right corner, a kneeling monk with a rosary in his hand is represented in the position of a donor. The inscription in the lower left corner identifies the monk as Mathias Murer, political representative ('Stadthalter') of St. Gall in Switzerland, a post he occupied from 1590 until his death in 1613. The connection to the important monastery of St. Gall is also manifested through the representation of two local saints in the upper corners of the panel: St. Gall, the founder of the monastery, in the upper left, and St. Othmar, the first abbot of St. Gall, in the upper right.
