Source Description
The painter Félix Ziem (1821-1911) recalled visiting the Forest of Fontainebleau with Barye noting:"We [Ziem and Diaz] went to the forest with Rousseau, and Millet and Barye: Barye, the austere sculptor . . . knew only the power of action and didn't say a word."This sketch, which can be related to backgrounds in Barye's paintings, may have been based on the rocky terrain in the Apremont Gorges, a valley in the forest.
