Source Description

Garden and grove set the stage for men and women whose amorous encounters illustrate the labors of the months of April and May. The garden on the left celebrates courtly, or unattainable, love: lovers exchange furtive glances before a flowery bower woven through a willow fence, while three court ladies weave garlands of roses. The scene to the right illustrates a more carnal love: the horse's toothy grin reflects the playful mood of the lovers' escapade in the woods.
