This pair of vases was manufactured by Barbedienne and Company. William and Henry Walters acquired numerous works made by the renowned French foundry; Barbedienne cast many bronzes modeled by Antoine-Louis Barye, a sculptor of animals who was a great favorite of the collectors. These vases were very likely designed by Louis-Contant Sévin, who, in 1855, became a designer at the Barbedienne firm.
