Document source description
Beak-nosed winged goblins ("tengu") swarm about Takatoki, making him dance until he nearly faints. Hojo Takatoki (1303-33), a feeble-minded, vicious, and debauched military ruler, believed his palace was infested with goblins who mocked and attacked him. This print illustrates the climactic dance scene from a Kabuki play based on the last days of his rule. The famous actor Ichikawa Danjuro IX portrays Takatoki.
