Document source description
The fierce brother Matsuomaru (center) has been ordered by his master Shihei to help carry out the murder of the son of the regent Sugawara, Shihei's enemy and Matsuomaru's former lord. But Matsuomaru has already formed misgivings about his allegiance to Shihei. Sugawara's son is now a pupil in calligraphy at the academy of Genzo (left). An imperial messenger Shundo Genba (right) has demanded the head of the son. Takebe Genzo (left) returns with the box the messenger brought. It is Matsuomaru who must open the box and identify the head. Alas, it is his own son's head that is in the box. But by identifying it as that of Sugawara's son, he redeems the family's honor.
