e. + & S 7d 3 in July 24, 1918. No. 22236 5 Miss Minnie M. Bethune, 3501 5th Avenue, Pittsburg, Pas at My dear Miss Bothune: We find that you have stated that you will be available for duty on November Ist. A notification received today from the Surgeon General's Office states that they are needing 2500 murses immediately for service. Inasmuch as this is the case I am venturing to send you this letter to urge you to give us a date as for in advance of that already given as possible. I feel sure that you are aware of the conditions in Europe, of the enormous size of the Army that has been S ent to that country, and of the fact that nurses are being sithdrawm from the centorments as ropidly as possible to take care of our sick and wounded men "over there". Their places must be filled in the cantonments without delay; otherwise the soliders from the new draft coming in, who are susceptible to disease in all forms during the early days of their training, will be sadly in need of nursing care. You are probably aware that it is the policy of the Surgeon General's office to send all nurses that came into the service first to the cantonments for their preliminary training, withdrowing them later for overseas duty should additional nurses be required. I am appealing to your sense of pa triotism and your devotion to the cause. May I hope, therefore, for a prompt reply, if possible by telegram, giving the advanced date when you will be available for service, and a correct address to which transportation orders may be sent. Very truly yours, Director, Bureau Field Nursing Service. 2 2 N W 0
