B ow Estas June 5th 1920 Niss Gertrude Bowling, Care of, liss Lillian Hudson, Teachers College, Columbia University, New York City. I Ny dear Miss Bowling: I am sorry I did not have an opportunity to see and talk with you two or three woeks ago when I spoke to the public health nurses at Teachers college. Miss Hudson told me something of your work and your tentative plans for the future but I should like to have had un opportunity to have had a personal talk with you as 1 em especially interested, of course, in all our Johns Hopkins nurses who are taking up public he=lth nursing. I am now writing to see 1f I can interest you in accepting e posi- tion as public health nurse for Telbot County, Muryland. As you are a Mary- lander perhaps you re fomiliar with this particular county, which is one of the eustern shore counties, but in case you do not happen to know this particular county let me give you some idea of it. I had the good fortune a week ago of visiting this particular county for the purpose of giving one of the graduating talks to the graduat- ing class of the hospital at Easton, the county seat. 1 was entertuined by Mrs. Thomas Cullen (nee Mery Burtlett ixon) the Editor of our Magazine and so had an opportunity to see more of the county then I might have other- wise. It is one of those counties on the estern shore which it seemed to me was so cut up by bays and rivors there was more w ter then there was land giving it an unusuel beauty. I don't know when I have seen any part of the country so beautiful ithout the aid of mount ins or the oceans. There are several old southern homes in the county and many people whom you ould find most congenial and who would afford you more ompanionship then most of our rural nurses can have. Some of those who would be behind the nursing ser - vice live in the county the year round, 1 understand, and others are there except for a few winter months. 1 thought they showed a genuinely sincore interest in the well being of the people in the county and in the proposed public health nursing service. I think any nurse g ing there would be cer- toin to have active, intelligent and sincere support from the Chapter people and from those interested or engaged insociate work of one kind or another in the county. It seems to me it would ble a particularly congenial piece of wor k for a hopkins nurse inasmuch as th re are three Hopkins nurses living th re. Two of them, Miss Frances Butler and Xiss loborley ire in charge of the training school in ston. The other is Mrs. Cullen, whose family home is near Easton and who spends the greater part of the yeur there. These three are very much interested in the proposed pursing service, especially Urs.
