My desr Miss
We were so happy to have you at our annual meeting and we are
glad you enjoyed it, but I was disappointed in not being able to have
B
a little visit with you. Perhaps you will come down some other time
when I an not overburdened with meetings. I hope no.
As to the professional status of the graduate zurge, I do think
that we have made some progress although I have to admit that the dis-
cussion in the little session which you attended did nét indicate too much
had been done. We have a civil service committee in the Graduate Nurses'
Association which is giving a good deal of time and attention to this
matter, not only locally but nationally through the American Nurses*
Association civil service committee.
I am sfraid the real hitch is within the Governmental agencies
and is largely a matter of administration, that is, as far as nurges
here are concerned. You will be interested to know that the Subcommittee
on Nursing, which is now tied up with the Government as a war aghiujty,
has made a definite recommendation that a well qualified nurse be appointed
to the Civil Service Commission. A good deal of work has been done along
this line and we are hopeful that results will soon be obtained. When this
happens I believe some of the difficulties will be straightened out.
I am in accord with your thinking that the nursing profession
could be benefited by the backing of the Federation of Nomen'a Clubs,
both locally and nationally. By the way, 1 have long since been a great
believer in the influence of lay people to create public opinion for a
professional group such as ours. I have been trying to accomplish something
along this line and I believe have succeeded in certain apots. Recently, we
were able to interest the president of the General Federation of Nomon's
Clubs in our nursing activities connected with the var effort to the point
of the preparation of a specific program for the whole country. You may
be interested in the attabhed pamphlet which outlines 6 objectives for a
nursing program in which local clubs may participate. The program was
prepared jointly by the president of the General Federation of Tomen's
Clubs, (who by the way is a graduate nurse), National Nursing Council for
War Service, and the Red Cross. Perhaps your local clubs who have alroady
received this information are interested in carrying out some of the sug-
gestions. If not, perhaps you are in a position to start the ball rolling.
