x Miss Mary Beard, Director Page Three September 21, 1942 Mrs. American Red Cross Nursing Service Miss Helen Streeter requested to be returned on October first. This was a great surprise and disappointment. It seems that she had expected her fiance, who is an M.D. in the army, to be sent to the Islands, but recently he has been quite permanently assigned to some location on the West Coast and writes urging her to return as soon as possible to be married. It was decided at the meeting that T Miss Streeter should wait to be replaced in the Unit before her release would be e granted. However, just recently there has arisen a complicating factor, which she had not reported as she feared another hospitalization. She has not been £ eeling well for approximately ten days or two weeks now. There has been an occasional re- turn of her nausea and vomiting which she had previous to her severe attack of acute hepatitis and she has been having joint pains in her legs at night, causing considerable stiffness, which remains sometimes even during the daytime, causing difficulty in walking. Whether these symptoms will increase or vanish in time is a / import matter to be seen. She was advised to be frank and to report all symptoms so that if care is needed it may be accorded her. So the final decision in her problem will have to be left for a later date. Miss Mae Lowney became ill again on August 16th. She, too had never recovered completely from pains in her hands, arms and legs and back, simulat- ing not only joint pains, but muscle pains at times. She was hospitalized for eighteen days, until a slight improvement in her condition was seen, and then permitted to re- turn to the residence for further convalescence. She is apparently gradually imp- roving, but very slowly as she still walks, at times, with difficulty. She comp- lains of a palpating sensation and a rapid pulse following any slight physical strain. No actual damage to the cardiac muscle has been detected from examination. However a long period of convalescence seems to be in store for her. Her month of consecutive illness ended on September 15th. I shall endeavor to get a written report of her illness to you very shortly so that the insurance company may again be notified that she is entitled to payments from September 16th on. Dr. Waite has been a little too busy to prepare that for me. In regard to her future plans, it has been recommended that she should return to the Mainland unless Dr. Doolittle feels that she might be able to return to duty within sixty days, or less. I have not been able to secure his opinion about that since the meeting but will let you know as soon as I can. Miss Lowney is rather discouraged about these prolonged signs of her disability. She is a very active person normally and is a very good worker and the inactivity causes off stay her to be quite unhappy. Although she is far from able to be assigned to duty yet, we have tried to keep her busy the last week or so with typing and occasional relief laboratory work. Just where she would be the happiest for a lengthly period of conva- lescence is difficult to decide, as her friends she has here in the Unit are stronger than any Mainland attachments to which she might return. Miss Hazel Moores and Miss Beatrice Porter, although apparently not so unhappy as they were the first two or three months of their service with the Unit, still desire to be returned to the Mainland as soon as they can be replaced. They are very willing, however, to vait for replacements. I discussed with them your state- ment to me of August 2lst that they would be expected to remain a year. However, due to Dr. Arnold's statement to the group they, of course, are also asking to be released as soon as replacements can arrive. I feel that since these other replacements are life having to be made, their requests should be granted also. U Mrs. Louise Clifford is applying for only temporary employment with the Office of Civilian Defense following October first, as she has been notified by a expired
