Miss Ella Coquard ististill being h .ain 102 VASW held in New York. Recent letters from Mis Stimson explain that she was sent back as un- fit for active service. I saw her in New York and heard her story which made one feel that she had hardly been given a square deal. Miss Lena Johnson who sailed on the same steamer was in no way responsible for Miss Coquard as she had been placed in charge of a Greek Unit. Miss Coquard explained that she always suffered a great dax deal from sea sickness and altho she would have been exdeedingly glad to have helped with the card of those who needed her attention she was not physically fit for the same. Miss Coquard was selected by one of our Division Directors and highly recommended by a great many who had watched her work. She is not a woman of very much education but speaks French. Miss Stimson laid considerable emphasis upon the fact that she had been turned down by the Surgeon General. This does not mean very much. She had not been in Military service, and the physical examination blank which she submitted tothat office was not accepted owing to the fact that her eyesight did not meet the rigid military test. She was ac- cepted for overseas duty by our Division Director upon the strength Of a very careful ph physical examination made by our Division officer who felt that she was quite equal to the service.overseas Miss Stimson also states that she received no education until she was eighteen. I can find no evidence of that fact in any of her papers.Miss Johnson, who sailed/on the same steamer, was found to be a very difficult, interfering person before she left New York and we were very much afraid that we should have trouble on her account.
