AMERICAN RED CROSS
(CROIX-ROUGE AMÉRICAINE)
2, Place de Rivoli, Paris.
January 27th, 1919.
Miss Clara D. Noyes,
Acting-Director, Department of Nursing,
American Red Cross, WASHINGTON, D.C.
My dear Miss Noyes,
I had not intended to mention my illness, as it has not
amounted to much and I shall be entirely well and out on a tour of
the hospitals long before Miss Hall's letter reaches you. As
however she has mentionned it, I am writing this letter of explana-
tion. I confess that I feel rather impatient, as I häve beén
so well during the past years and was perfectly well on the steamer
coming
over I visited practically all the hospitals in Brest
and never felt better in my life. A few days after my arrival in
Paris, I developed a sore, throat, but as it did not seem to be
anything very much, I paid little attentior to it, as I had no idea
of the prevalence of throat and ear trouble over here. I did not
see a doctor, but did. ask for a gargle at the American Ambulance
one evening that I was out there to 'dinner. On Friday my ear
began to trouble me more or less, but did not pain me specially.
On Saturday I felt pretty miserable, but was planning for an auto-
mobile trip to Tours leaving Paris Sunday morning at 9 o'clock. I
confess that I was a little dépessed about the possibility of being
able to get off, but as all the -plans were made, I did not like to
make any objection. By 3 o'clock I felt pretty wretched and went
to the hotel, thinking that a hot water bag would probably relieve
the ear. By this time the pain was pretty severe and continued
until about 8 o'clock, when the ear-drum ruptured. The in was
so severe and the roaring in my head so great that I could not use
the telephone and so was unable to get hold of anybody until about
this time. (Miss Jones at A.R.C. Hospital No IOI was a perfect
trump. As soon as she found out the situation, she sent a nurse
and a doctor and I was whisked out of bed, dressed in no time and
landed in the hospital about mid-night. The ear has cleared
up
very well, but I still have a great deal of roaring in my head
and am unable as yet to hear anything from the one ear. I do
not
suppose that I should complain, after the men have put up with so
much more, but I confess I am a little annoyed and blame myself
for not having the sense enough to have, taken care of the throat
in the beginning I can only hope to heaven that I shall regain
my hearing in time.
Miss Stimson is in Paris for a few days and willcome with
me to some of the military hospitals, as soon as the doctor will
allow me to start. I came down from the hospital yesterday
