the possibilites which lay in public health nursing. Those little
eabins
shaoks where she visited could be made into a school-room, where
she could teach the women how to safequard themselves against colds,
and the "grippe", and how to take ware of their children, and the
home,
little crying babies that come so often to a miners cabin. In the
clear light of their dire necessity, she saw the great practical
social service which lay in visiting nursing, a service, built on
the soundest tprinciples of philanthropy,
which
struck
to the very root of sickness and the suffering and the misery
which it brings.
The growth of this vision of "a healthier, and
theroforo a happier America" was wholly unconscious at first.
Her life was crowded with the responsibilities which come to
every strong executive. Behind her desk at Bellevue Hespital
in New York ity
Training School for Nurses/ she administered the big hospital
with a practical competency worthy England Housekeeper.
She used to walk through the wards, always alert for infringements
of the standards which the school maintained. Her discipline
was/severe. Scrupulously careful of detail herself, she demanded
that her nurses take infinite pains. A dynamic worker herself,
