ALICE L. FITZGERALD RECEIVES THE FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE MEDAL.
The International Red Cross Committee at Geneva, Switzerland,
upon recommendation of the Central Committee of the American Red Croes,
has conferred the Florence Hightingale Medal upon Alice L. Fitzgerald,
a member of the American Red Cross Bursing Service.
The Medal is awarded to "graduate nureea who may have espec-
ially distinguished themselve by exceptional devotion to the sick and
wounded in peace and war." The awarding of such a Medal was decided
upon at the time of the Ninth International Red Cross Conference in
Washington in May 1912, the bestowal of which was intended as the
highest honor that could be paid a turse.
The following record of Miss Fitzgerald's life and service,
which was submitted to the Committee, indicates a long and devoted
adherence to the ideals and standards of the American Red Crose Nursing
Service:

Graduated from School of Nursing, Johne Hopkins Hospital, 1906.
Assisted Nossina Earthquake, 1908.
Head Marca, Johns Hopkins Hospital, 1910-1911.
Operating Rdion Heree, Bellevue Hospital, New York City, 1911-1912.
Unrolled American Red Cross Nursing Service, 1913.
Supt. with Wilkes-Barre City Hospital, Ps. 1912.
healgned to the British Expeditionary Forces, as Edith Cavell Memorial
Naree, December 1917.
Transferred to the American Red Cross in France, February, 1918.
Served vita the Service de Sante, France, 1918-1919.
Assigned as Chief Nurse, American Red Cross Commission to Europe, May 1919.
Released from the American Red Cross to become the Director of the
Nurving Service, League of Red Gross Societies, Nov. 17, 1919.
Resigned from the League of Red Cross Societies in the fall of 1921 to
accept appointment in the Philippines under the International Health
Board of the Rockefeller Foundation, to curvey nursing and advise Governor.
from the Philippines service in the fall of 1924.
Seturned to the ingue of Red Cross Societies for six months in 1925 to
relieve the Director of the Bursing Service.
Apsigned under the Rockefeller Foundation as Director of lursing,
Strivej Foundatal, Bangkok, Sima, 1926.
