Miss Fulton:
-2-
February 25, 1941
We are writing to the State Department, supporting your application
and requesting that the passport be sent to us so that we may obtain a
British visa for you here in Washington, after which we will return the
passport to you. There may be some delay in obtaining our passports until
we know just what boat We will be sailing on. So do not become disturbed
if you fail to receive yours shortly after application has been filed.
We would like to have the following information: your full name;age;
religion; the name and address of your nearest relative, stating relationship;
and the name and address of the person or bank to which you wish to have your
salary paid while you are in England. Salaries will be paid the first of the
month automatically in America. These will be less deductions on a drawing
account for personal expenses in England. Your family will be notified of
your arrival there and it is the present intention of Harvard University to
issue a monthly report to them. Mail may be sent to the American Red Cross
Headquarters, London, England. It will be forwarded to us from there.
We are sending you a copy of the latest News Release. You may be
contacted by the press and with permission of your present employer, it
will be quite alright to discuss your appointment to the Harvard Unit.
Do not take cameras.
If there are any questions you would like to ask, do not hesitate.
Answers to a collection of questions might make up a good final letter
beneficial to all of us. You will be attached to Group II of the Public
Health Nurses which will be required to serve in the hospital and to work
in the field as the occasion arises. That is why we are providing you with
6 white indoor uniforms and caps.
We would like to know if you are having any difficulty in holding your
present position. We understand fully how difficult it must be for employers
of our applicants and greatly appreciate their cooperation.
Sincerely yours,
Gertrude Madley,
Chief Nurse,
American Red Cross-
Harvard Hospital Unit.
