MISS INA M. GASKILL
Miss Ina M. Gaskill, 62 years
old, nurse and teacher of home
nursing and hygiene at Short-
ridge High School and former
State Board of Health official,
died yesterday in her home, 623,
East 53d Street. She had been
ill the last four months.
An Indianapolis resident the
last 40 years, Miss Gaskill, a
native of Frankfort, was grad-
uated from Frankfort High School
and the old Joseph Eastman Hos-
pital Training School for Nurses
in Indianapolis.
Miss Gaskill was believed to be
the first nurse assigned to schools
here, having joined the staff of
Indianapolis public schools in
1924. While at Shortridge, in ad-
dition to serving as nurse, she
taught subjects, including health,
first aid, nutrition, home nursing
and hygiene.
FORMERLY CHIEF nurse of
Indianapolis tuberculosis clinics,
Miss Gaskill organized and super-
vised the social service depart-
ment at Sunnyside Sanatorium,
later becoming chief American
Red Cross nurse for the state of
Indiana.
In 1920 Miss Gaskill became di-
rector of the then newly-organized
Bureau of Public Health Nursing
of the Indiana State Board of
Health through an agreement be-
tween the American Red Cross
and the board, and in that capac-
ity she did outstanding work in
promoting, developing and stand-
ardizing public health nursing
throughout the state.
During the 1937 flood Miss Gas-
kill served as chairman of the
Indianapoiis Committee of the
American Red Cross Nursing
Service.
She held membership in several
professional societies, including the
American Nurses Association, the
National Public Health Nursing
Association and the state and dis-
trict nursing associations. She
was also a past president of the
State Nursing Association and was
an active member of the Meridian
Heights Presbyterian Church.
SURVIVORS include a brother,
A. Ray Gaskill, Frankfort; two
nieces, Mrs. Everett Derick,
Frankfort, and Mrs. Alfred Grue-
ber, Hudson, Mich., and a nephew,
David G. Derick, Frankfort.
Funeral services will be con-
ducted at 3 o'clock tomorrow aft-
ernoon in the Flanner & Bu-
chanan Mortuary by the Rev. Roy
B. Conner, pastor of the Meridian
Heights Presbyterian Church.
Burial will be in Frankfort.
