G T obber E UNIVERSITY OF CINCINNATI S MCMICKEN COLLEGE OF LIBERAL ARTS K OFFIGE OR THE DEAN Fehruary 24, 1943 M a A.R. C MAIL room I LD Mrs. E. B. Amick FEB 261943 Assistant to Director Nursing Service National Headquarters Refern musing 5 American Red Cross Washington, D. C. C. Dear Mrs. Amick, I have known Miss Marian Gilson since shortly after her arrival in Cincinnati, and have had occasion ari to observe her both from the academic angle and from that of her contribution to a group of students at the church which I happen to attend. Perhaps I may add that during the last war I myself helped in the organization of a Red Cross unit which operated right at the front both in Flanders and Italy, so that I have had opportunity to form an opinion as to the most desirable characteristics and personal traits in a nurse destined for overseas service. C I believe that Miss Gilson has in a marked degree the characteristics of iniative, reliability, loyalty, M cooperativeness and sense of purpose most sought for in candidates. She is professionally competent and seems 1 to get on well with strangers. She is poised and mature in outlook and has been a leader among her group. I have no hesitation in recommending her for this type of active duty which calls for a high degree of ability to adjust without effort to makeshift conditions and improvisation. Yours truly, George B, Barbour, Dean It 0 U a
