Sofia, Bulgaria, March 28th, 1917.
THE QUEEN REGRETS DEPARTURE AMERICAN
RED CROSS NURSES.
I have the honor to report that Miss Rachel C. Torrance,
American Red Cross Nurse, left Sofia for Vienna on the 18th
inst.,and arrived there safely on the following day.
She had been working, with Miss Helen Scott Hay, also
of the Amerioan Red Cross, in Philippopolie for aver a year
past, both ladies being under the special pabronage of
Her Majesty, Queen Eleonore. Prbor to her departure, the
following telegram was received from Mdlle Helene Petroff,
Lady in Waiting to the Queen:
"Her Majesty, the Queen, is exceedingly sorry that
"Miss Torrance's father is ill. She has nothing
As to postpone for Miss her Hay, journey Her Majesty because bege of most the dangers. earnestly her
to urge against her departure but advises
that she will not now leave the work she has
carried on so well. Please refer this wish of
'Her Majesty|sthe Queen, to the American Red Cross.
"Héléne Petroff.
The following telegram was then despatched to the Depart-
ment through the Embassy at Vienna:

"March 10th, 1917 - for Secetate, tenth - please
"advise Redoross that Torrance preparing leave
J
"for Barcelona enroute home stop Her Majesty,
"Que en Eleonore, urges Redoross permit Miss Hay
C
'remain stop answer requested".
