Professional experience:
1908 - on staff at Trudeau Sanatorium, Saranac, N.Y.
1909-1910 - Educational Secretary T.B. League,
Pittsburgh, Pa.
1912-1917 - Visiting Nursing & Social Work, Bound
Brook, New Jersey.
1917 - Assigned to American Red Cross Commission
to Italy. Assisted in military hospitals,
and later in tuberculosis work.
Feb. 1920 - Transferred from Italy to Serbia for
Child Welfare Work.
April, 1920 - Transferred to Greece.
July 21, 1923 - Released
Organized Child Welfare Work of an outstanding character in cooperation with
the Patriotic League in Greece.
Served as Director of Nursing, American Red Cross Commission to Greece, in
connection with relief of refugees following the burning of Smyrna. Also
assisted with the organization of the National Society of Nurses of Greece,
later admitted to the International Council of Nurses.
Upon return to United States was assigned, January, 1924, to Santo Domingo,
as an American Red Cross Chapter Nurse, where she developed an excellent
course of instruction in Home Hygiene & Care of the Sick for native women.
Released October 1924.
January 1925 - Assigned as Red Cross Nursing Field Representative for states
of Florida and Georgia. During this period rendered service
in connection with Florida hurricane.
January 1927 - Transferred to New York state in same capacity.
September 1930 - Sent to Kentucky, temporarily, to assist with drought relief
work.
Eastern are
April 1931 - Transferred to American Red Cross Headquarters as Assistant
Director of Public Health Nursing Service. still holding this
position.
Mrs. Heilman has served the American Red Cross with distinction almost con-
tinously since 1917 in many fields and types of work.
In 1933 the seventh award of the Florence
Nightingale Medal was made to Mrs. Heilman
by Judge John Barton Payne.
The Common Council passed a resolution expressing its appreciation and thanks
for her services, which resolution read as follows:
"BE IT RESOLVED, That the Common Council of the City of Olean hereby
expresses its appreciation and thanks to Mrs. Charlotte M. Heilman,
Nursing Field Representative of the National American Red Cross,
for the valuable service she has rendered to the City of Olean
during the typhoid fever epidemic.
Arriving in Olean on October 6, 1928, she immediately took charge
of the Red Cross of this City, promptly secured nurses from surrounding
