Heilman, 76, of King George Rd., whose 38-year Red Cross career brought her honors in many parts of the world. Mrs. Heilman, who was the prototype for a prominent character in Ernest Hemingway's World War 1 novel "A Farewell to Arms," died Wednesday eve- ning in Somerset Hospital, Som- erville, where she had been a pa- tient for 11 days. As a nurse in the Milan (Italy) Red Cross Hospital in 1918, Mrs Heilman attended the wounded American writer. The germ of his novel's plot took form in his mind there and Mrs. Heilman later re- called that the character of Miss Gage, a sympathetic nurse in the hospital where Lieutenant Henry was treated, appeared to have Mrs. Charlotte M. Heilman been based on her. Mrs. Heilman, who had been ing the Greek-Turkish war.
