My dear Miss Kerr:
Miss Hall brought your letters just
as I was preparing to start for the Annual Conversion
of the National League of Nursing Education held in
Chicago. I therefore deferred repl ing. I have only
just reached my desk this rorning after an absence of
nearly a week. I find on my desk this morning a letter
from Mr. milling who is now the Vice-Chairman, stating -
"we have used Grery efforttio obtain permission for the
transfer of Miss Delano's body, having among other
things taken the matter up with Col. House. It is very
evident that nothing can be done in the immediate future.
Under the circumstances it saams wise for Miss Kerr to
return." The last report from Miss Fitzgerald stated
"that the Red Cross had asked the army to rehisase the body
to us." It is just possible that something has been done
which will help to expedite the situation, of which we have
no knowledge. I are making the suggestion just as Mr.
Walling has made it to me. Of course, you understand
that &if you desire to stay in France independently of the
Red Cross that this would be your privilege. I have felt
from the beginning that it would be Very doubtful as to
the possibility of returning Miss Delano's body. much as
we might like this to be done.
I have taken up the question of the stone
with Mr. Walling and Mr. Munroe and while they saw some
difficulties, they were quite ready to a prove of something
being done. They have suggested the very simplest stone,
and such marking as you and the Paris Office would feel
would be adequate. I have talked to several of our leading
nurses and members of the National Committee and while they
expressed their approval of the sentiment they were inclined
to feel that as her last resting place would unquestionably
be Arlington and that a suitable stone or marking should be
e rected there, that the temporary cross usedufor officers
and soldiers in France would be appropriate and suitable
also for Miss Delano. It is just possible that the suggest-
ion that you make is being carried out for others. If you
and the Paris office decide to put up a simple marble cross,
I do not Bae how you could SIN more than these words. -
