The American National Red Cross 50 YEARS OF SERVICE TO HUMANITY 1881-1931 Midwestern Branch Office St. Louis, Mo. FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY ROLL CALL NOVEMBER 11 . 26, 1931 September 15, 1931 PERSONAL Miss Ida F. Butler, National Headquarters, American Red Cross, Washington, D.C. My dear Miss Butler:- I am enclosing a letter from Miss Alice Evangeline Lake, the Chair- man of our Colorado State and Local Committee on Red Cross Nursing Service. I am hoping that you will be there when she arrives. Some time ago Mrs. Gwynn, the/Secretary of our Committee at that time visited National Head- quarters and apparently the reception that she was given was not very cordial. Her husband was quite put out about it and it resulted in her resigning as Secretary and also from the Red Cross Nursing Service. However, she has since then been reinstated. These women work so hard and I am constantly telling them how much both the National and the Branch Office appreciates what they are doing, and this, of course, does lead them to expect a bit of attention at Headquarters. I mention this because of the reaction as a result of Mrs. Gwynn's visit to Washington on some of the nurses in Colorado and I should like very much to counteract this if possible. Please do not think that I am expecting you to do anything unusual as far as Miss Lake is concerned. I do, however, want her to feel that we do recognize and appreciate what she and her Committee are doing for not just Red Cross Nursing but Red Cross as a whole. Very sincerely yours, Elabat W. laughan (Mrs. Elsbeth H. Vaughan, Assistant National Director, Nursing Service, Midwestern Branch EHV/vm (Encl)
