Minnesota School of Nursing, Minneapolis, Minnesota. Director of the United
States Cadet Nurse Program, United States Public Health Service. Chief
Nurse Officer and Assistant Surgeon General, United States Public Health
Service. She holds eight honorary doctorate degrees.
As Director of the
United States Cadet Nurse Corps during World War II, Mrs. Leone planned and
helped administer a greatly expanded program of nursing education in the
United States to meet the needs of our military services, and also to continue
the care of civilian patients. Under her leadership, senior cadet nurses
were assigned to the military hospitals in the United States to release
graduate nurses for active service with the military overseas. Under Mrs.
Leone's leadership plans were made to maintain high standards of nursing
education for the greatly expanded number of student nurses recruited through
the cadet nurse program.
In recognition of this outstanding work Mrs. Leone was appointed in 1949
