In 1917, Miss Taylor became director of the Army School of Nursing at Camp Meade, Md. Following World War I, she became assistant director of Nursing Services at the Yale School of Nursing. In 1934, she was named dean, a post she held for the next decade. Miss Taylor was elected president of the International Council of Nurses in 1937. After the onset of World War II, her four-year term was extended and she held the position for ten years, keeping all records of the Council in her home during the wartime period. Early in her professional career, Miss Taylor enrolled as a volunteer Red Cross nurse. While chairman of Nursing Services of the New Hayen Red Cross Chapter, she was on duty day and night directing the work of her volunteer nurses during the Eastern States Floods of 1955 and a disastrous factory fire in 1957. Mrs. Leone, a native of Lewisburg, Ohio, is the newly elected president of the National League for Nursing. She has been an instructor and associate professor at the University of Minnesota School of Nursing and director of the Cadet Nurse Program of the U.S. Public Health Service. In the latter position, during World War II, she helped plan and administer a greatly expanded program of nursing education whereby senior cadet nurses were assigned to military hospitals in this country, thus releasing graduate nurses for active military service overseas. In recognition of this outstanding work, Mrs. Leone was named chief nurse offi- cer and assistant surgeon general of the U.S. Public Health Service in 1949. As such, she holds the ranks of rear admiral in the Navy and brigadier General in the Army. She is a member of the Executive Council of the National Committee for the Im- provement of Nursing Services and has been a member of the Nursing Advisory Committee for the W. K. Kellogg Foundation. She also was nursing advisor of the U.S. delega- tions to the 1948 and 1956 assemblies of the World Health Organization. -2- -15216-559
