December 16. 1918. Mr. H. Alexandar Smith, United States Food Administration, Washington, D. C. My dear Mr. Smith: When I saw you I felt perfectly safe in stating that Miss Lewis had not been sent overseas. Immediately upon the receipt of the protest from the Colorado Springs Chapter I sent a formal communication to the Division of Personnal, asking them to cancel the sailing. embarr- assment and surprise to find a few days later that this request had been overlooked and that Miss Lewis had already sailed. Consequently, I could not stop her. I am enclosing, herewith a copy of Mr. King's letter in confirmation with this statement. I have already taken this up with the Pikes Peak Chapter as I felt this was only fair to the Department of Nursing. Very truly yours, Director, Bureau of Field Nursing Service. N/K
