AIR MAIL
Miss Florence E. Little
Sacred Hearts Hospital
Honolulu, T. H.
My dear Miss Little:
Your very understanding letter of September 28 addressed to
Mrs. Amick has been referred to me as Mrs. Amick is not now in this
office. I hope that you will be able to talk over all of the points
which you have brought out in your letter with the Chief Nurse in
charge of your hospital or with Miss MacLachlan, the Supervisory Nurse.
The Red Cross, as you know, is not carrying the responsibility
for the hospitals to which the nurses recruited through this organization
are assigned, but we have been assured of the constant efforts made to
stabilize the situation in every way possible. I think it is very likely
indeed that the general hospital situation in Hawaii is at the moment at
least no worse than at home. It would, however, be a very much more
difficult situation to help at short notice because of its isolation. I
am very glad to know that you have been happy in the work which you have
been doing. Your Chief Nurse or Miss Machachlan will, I know, count on
your discussing the matter with them.
No assignments afenurses are being made at the present time
under the American Red Cross for foreign or war rehebilitation work. We
are not certain just what demands will be made on us but it seems likely
that two or three nurses, one a nursing school administrator and one a
public health administrator might be needed in a single country if there
is a request for help, their work being to help the nurses of the country
get their programs started.
I an taking the liberty of sending to Miss Machachlan a carbon copy
of this letter to you.
Sincerely yours,
Virginia M. Dunbar
