Teachers College, Columbia University, New York City, HARRIET M. GILLETT, Dept.
Secy., 3/9/37. "Mrs. Esther Kalloch Long has completed 14 points of work here at
the College. This consisted of 3 points in English, 3 points in Chemistry, 2
points in Educational Psychology, 4 points in Public Health Nursing, and 2 points
in Social Work. She made very good grades, and contributed to class discussions.
Mrs. Long had no field work under our supervision."
Henry Street Visiting Nurse Service, New York City, ELIZABETH MACKENZIE, Acting General
Dir. of Nursing Service, 3/9/37. "Mrs. Long is a staff nurse in this organization
since January 1926 having been absent from the staff for varying lengths of time
amounting to ap roximately three years. As a staff nurse, Mrs. Long gives excellent
nursing care arranging her work systematically and carrying out her plan intelligently.
She teaches clearly inspiring confidence and studying her material to the capacity of
the families. She is well acquainted with resources of the community and uses them
intelligently for the betterment of her families' problems. Mrs. Long has a pleasant
personality, adjusts well to people, understands other peoples' viewpoint and co-
operates easily. During 1936 Mrs. Long was given the senior staff experience which
consists of assisting the supervisor with the undergraduate students, preparing and
giving their conferences, and assisting with their field supervision. She carried the
responsibility well, demonstrated an ability to plan the work of a student group to
advantage, adjusting the field work to supplement conferences; made her material
interesting and helpful to the students."
Recreation Rooms and Settlement, New York City, CAROLINE H. THIEN, Supervisor Medical
Social Service, 3/9/37. "From the spring of 1932 until July 1, 1935 when she left us
to go to summer school at Teachers' College for further study, Mrs. Long was with us
two and one half days each week by special arrangement with the Henry Street Nursing
Service. We were not able to pay for full time services of a specially trained public
health nurse. That arrangement would not have terminated if we had had the money to
continue. Mrs. Long is a very capable person. She was given full charge of our clinics
(health and preschool for our own groups) and the necessary follow up work. In the summer
she assisted with the medical inspections for our playschool and camps. She is a person
of very pleasing personality and affable manner, and, through her tact and common sense,
established a very satisfactory relationship between herself and the patient or client.
Her interest in and understanding of people's problems as a whole made her services
valuable to us. Aside from being a very delightful person, she is an excellent nurse and
teacher. We parted with her very reluctantly because she was not only dependable, but
highly efficient in organizing and executing her job."
