JOHNSTON - WILLIS HOSPITAL
VIRGINIA 23221
SCHOOL OF NURSING
DATE: January 23, 1969
TO:
Mr. Donald B. Bishoff
FROM:
Mrs. John D. McKendrick, R.N.
It gives me a great pleasure to have the opportunity to state
what has been my thought for many years, "How fortunate Richmond and
the Red Cross are to have an Ann Frank Mahoney."
My association goes back to the "Thirties". As Ann Frank and
Frances Pleasant, we were members of the Fifth District of Virginia
State Nurses' Association - Red Cross Committee. Virginia Elliman
was in the same group.
My next real association was when I was interviewed by Ann
and selected to be sent to the Ohio Valley Flood, 1937, as a Public
Health Nurse. She was so enthusiastic about the assignment and so
supportive that the five-member team was eager, rather than fearful.
We were among the first nurses to arrive in Louisville, even before
the crest of the flood. I might add that Dr. Virginia Stone of
Duke University was one of our team. The priviledge of this Red
Cross Service is still one of the highlights of my 35 years of Nursing.
When I accepted a position with the Instructive Visiting Nurse
Society, Washington, D.C., Mrs. Mahoney was quick to give me a letter
of special introduction to meet the National Staff. Needless to say,
I ended up teaching for the District Chapter and being the "Cover
Girl" for National.
Upon returning to Richmond, Mrs. Mahoney was not long engaging
me in teaching Volunteer Nurses' Aides, Mother and Baby Care and
Home Care of the Sick classes. This teaching served as my orienta-
tion back into active nursing after an inactive eight years. I
might say in that eight years I offered my services but was never
called upon. Even though I lived through two severehurricanes, there
was no Ann Mahoney seeking assistance for community projects.
To me, Mrs. Mahoney has been a one-woman team in getting
inactive nurses oriented back into service. She has done this by
approaching new members of the nursing association, and others whom she
knew were not active--having them take the Instructor's Course,
teaching and thereby becoming secure enough to want to return to
nursing on a full-time basis. On our staff here in the School of
Nursing, and also in the Hospital, are a number of nurses who re-
entered through Mrs. Mahoney's efforts.
