Miss Frances Maltby,
Johnson Hall,
Columbia University,
411 West 116th Street,
New York City.
My dear Miss Maltby:
Your letter reached me very promptly and it gives me great
pleasure to write the following statement relative to your Red Cross
service.
You have been an enrolled Red Cross nurse since November 1,
1916 and our records indicate that your first service to the American
Red Cross was the Instruction of Classes in Home Hygiene and Care of the
Sick. In February 1919 the Red Cross assigned you as a speaker on the
Radcliffe Chautaugua Circuit and this service continued until November 12,
1919. As a Chautauqua speaker, you made notable success. In your letter
to us, you have referred to service in 1918 with the Radcliffe Chautauqua
Circuit but a record of this does not appeer in your Red Cross folder.
The files show, however, that following your Chautauqua service,
which terminated in November 1919, as stated above, we called upon you to
accompany Dr. Green on a speaking tour through some of the Southern states
for the purpose of interesting the people in the coming Roll Call.
When later, in 1924, we offered you the writing of the little
health book for the National Health Series, popularly know as the "Johnny"
book, we knew that we were very fortunate in securing your services and the
popularity of "Johnny" or "Home Care of the Sick" attests to your success
in popularizing, for the public mind, the essentials of Home Hygiene and
Care of the Sick.
We feel that your great contribution to the American Red Cross
has been your aplendid interest in this important Service and that the public
has gained much from you, not only through your assignment as a speaker on
the Chauteuqua but as the writer of our little book. I trust that this state-
ment will assist you in securing the course you are contemplating taking at
Teachers' College.
I assure you that we have appreciated having a person with your
fine social background, unusual education, ability and pleasing personality,
carry the message of the Red Cross, always using as your subjects, Public
Health and Home Hygiene and Care of the Sick.
Very sincerely yours,
Clara D. Noyes,
IFB
National Director, Nursing Service.
