IN MEMORY OF LUCY MINNIGERODE
The Federal Government Nursing Section of the American
Nurses' Association has selected the first anniversary (March, 24,
1936) of the death of Lucy Minnigerode to initiate a request
for
funds to establish a Lucy Minnigerode Memorial Fund for Conval-
escent Nurses at the Nurses' House, Babylon, Long Island.
Title
To the thousands of nurses who were familiar with the
pioneer work done by Lucy Minnigerode in the organization of the
Nursing Service of the United States Public Health Service, in
which she gave tirelessly of her time and energy to have the
standards of nursing established on the highest basis, and to
those who knew of her otherwise, it will not be necessary to
dwell upon the fact that her one thought was for the advance-
ment of nurses and nursing regardless of any personal sacrifice.
During the time she was a patient in hospital, re-
ceiving the care that enabled her to go back to her work, she
many times spoke of her wish that more nurses might have simi-
lar privileges during illness and convalescence. For this rea-
son it is believed that the suggested fund would be the kind of
memorial that she would have wished.
The Nurses' House at Babylon, Long Island, has been
selected due to the sound financial basis upon which it is or-
ganized and, too, because nurses from all over the country find
their way to New York, frequently requiring help if sickness
occurs. (See letter March number American Journal of Nursing
p.291).
It is desired that donations be entirely voluntary.
No sum is too small. The value of the Fund will depend upon
the amount raised. It is therefore hoped that you will use
every effort to bring this matter before all nurses and friends
of Miss Minnigerode so that they may have a share in perpetu-
ating the memory of one of America's finest pioneer workers
in the cause of professional women. Funds may be sent to the
Chairman or to the Superintendent of Nurses of any of the Gov-
ernment Nursing Services.
